Special Interview with Toshiya Miyata (Excerpt)

Q. Please tell us your honest thoughts on being appointed as the TGS2026 Official Supporter.

A. When people think of TGS, they think of an event where the latest news on new games drops non-stop and creators from all over the world gather—it’s an absolute dream come true for any gaming fan. I’ve loved games my entire life, so being trusted with the role of Official Supporter still feels so surreal to me. While staying true to my perspective as a fellow gaming fan, I want to give it my absolute all to share the magic of TGS with as many people as possible! As we celebrate this special 30th anniversary, I can’t wait to join everyone in making TGS2026 the most exciting one yet!

Q. What are your favorite games?

A. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always loved RPGs—that’s never changed. I also love raising characters/creatures, so games like the Pokémon series are a big favorite of mine. Lately, I am incredibly hooked on "Pokémon UNITE." I keep saying this everywhere, but I’m pretty sure I’m the strongest player in the Japanese entertainment industry! I’ve put so many hours into it that I’m like, "To anyone else in showbiz, I’m ready to take on your challenge anytime!"

Q. How did you first get into gaming?

A. When I was in the lower grades of elementary school, I had to stay in the hospital for just a few days. That’s when my grandmother went out and bought me a Game Boy along with a "Mario" game. Passing the time while hospitalized by playing on that classic gray Game Boy—the kind that took four batteries—was pretty much how my journey with video games began.

Q. Do you have any memories of playing games with your family?

A. Ever since I was a kid, my family and I used to play games like "Puyo Puyo" together. Also, my dad’s job was the kind where he’d already be gone for work by the time I woke up in the morning, and he’d come home after I went to bed. But whenever I set a new record in "Mario Kart’s" Time Trials, my dad would beat my time while I was asleep! Then, wanting to beat him back, I’d play again during the day, and after I went to sleep at night, he’d beat my time again. It went on like that day after day. We didn’t actually talk face-to-face all that much, but it became a core memory of playing with my dad through the game. I think it allowed us to build a really great relationship, even without words. It’s such a heartwarming story, I’m honestly hoping an indie game developer will turn it into a game for me (laughs).

Q. How do you spend your days off?

A. My routine is to wake up, jump straight into a match of "Pokémon UNITE" while still in bed to clear my head, and then start drinking coffee to kick off my day. Also, I went out to Akihabara with Tamamori, one of my fellow group members, to buy a gaming PC. We picked up a pretty high-spec one, so I’ve been using it to play games like "Genshin Impact." Genshin is honestly a game that really rewards logical thinking, isn’t it? There’s so much math and multiplying numbers involved, and sitting there figuring all of that out is a way I absolutely love spending my time.

Q. Do you ever feel like your circle of friends is expanding through gaming?

A. Oh, absolutely. There are so many people who genuinely love games, and lately, there are tons of games you can play together online, right? Including all of that, I definitely feel my circle of friends expanding. I often play "Monster Hunter" with Tamamori, another member of my group. And even though I’m honestly pretty bad at FPS games, he’ll be like, "Let’s do this!" and drag me into playing "Apex Legends" with him. I usually get taken out first (laughs), so most of the time I’m just sitting there watching Tama do his thing. I just watch him thinking, "Wow, Tama is amazing," feeling exactly like a girlfriend sitting next to her boyfriend while he plays games. Honestly, just watching is a blast.

Q. Tokyo Game Show celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and Kis-My-Ft2 also marks its 15th anniversary. How does it feel to be appointed as the Official Supporter in such a milestone year for both?

A. We’re only at the halfway mark compared to TGS, but I’m incredibly happy that our anniversaries happen to line up like this. Above all, for an event to continue for 30 years is truly a phenomenal achievement, so I want to take this opportunity to say a huge "Congratulations!" to everyone involved.
